I have always been challenged and fascinated by public speaking and interpersonal communication.  I vividly remember my high school and college public speaking experiences-- my knees knocking and palms sweating.  Despite my nervousness I felt exhilarated after successfully completing a speech.  My past experiences have influenced my teaching philosophy. Putting students at ease and encouraging them to get out of their comfort zones are some of my priorities.

In addition to the adrenaline rush of public speaking I also sought thrills by hiking to the top of three 15000 foot peaks in Colorado, exploring ice caves, mountain biking and being a white water rafting guide during my summer job at a youth summer camp.  My junior year I interviewed and was hired as a Walt Disney World college intern.  I drove to Disney not knowing a soul but returned with some lifelong friends.  Based on these experiences I think it is important for students to explore the world and experience new things.  Public speaking allows students to experience new ideas and learn from others experiences.

Since 1996 I sought the thrills of teaching public speaking, interpersonal communication and business communication courses here at Parkland ºÃÉ«ÏÈÉútv.  From 2005-2010 I took some time from teaching to work as Executive Director of Community Relations.  I managed marketing, print services, media relations, legislative relations and community relations for the college.  Other recent work experiences include working with the Parkland ºÃÉ«ÏÈÉútv Foundation and in Communication and Linguistic departments at University of Illinois. I am also an active member of Champaign West Rotary, 40 N 88 W Champaign’s local art council and National Communication Association.

I still enjoy trying new things.  In fall 2010 I began taking massage therapy classes here at Parkland.  I love being active.  I ride my bike, play tennis, garden, go hiking, and camping.  I love to travel.  I have been all over the United States and visited Costa Rica, Bonaire, Italy, England, France, Netherlands, Switzerland, and Brussels.
One of the things I enjoy most about teaching is the opportunity to meet so many fascinating people who will leave Parkland and accomplish great things in their lives.  I hope that I am able to better prepare them for that journey.
